Healthy Tips for Caring for Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins Treatment Pittsburgh PA | Sewickley, PA Varicose veins are a common condition in the US, affecting women slightly more often than men. These enlarged blood vessels usually affect the veins in your leg and foot and appear as red or blue in color. The cause of varicose veins is due to increased pressure on the vein over time. The valves that line the walls of your veins work to prevent blood flow from going backward as it moves up your body to your heart. When too much pressure is placed on your veins, there is a backflow of blood that pools and causes veins to enlarge.

varicose veins are more common in Individuals whom are:

  • Older in age
  • Overweight
  • Pregnant or in menopause
  • Constipated, as straining to have a bowel movement can obstruct blood flow in the deep leg veins
  • On birth control pills or other drugs containing progesterone or estrogen

How to Prevent Varicose Veins

If you suffer from varicose veins, there are measures you can take minimize the pain and discomfort associated with this condition. To help prevent or slow down varicose vein development, consider the following.

  • Eat a healthy diet. When you eat healthy foods and lower your sodium intake (which can cause swelling and water retention), you’re alleviating undue pressure off of your veins.
  • Activities like walking, biking, and swimming promote blood circulation in your legs. Before you start an exercise program, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor to make sure the activity is at an appropriate level for you.
  • When possible, take the time to lie down with your legs propped up on a stack of pillows, making sure that your legs are above the level of your heart.
  • Avoid standing for long periods of time. Standing (and even sitting) in one place for too long can interfere with blood flow. Try to remember to change your position periodically to keep this from happening.
  • Avoid certain types of clothing. Wearing tight clothes around your waist, groin or logs can reduce blood flow. And wear low-heeled shoes instead of high heels when possible to effectively work your calf muscles, improving muscle tone and circulation.
